Juniper Townsend died of carbon monoxide poisoning at the ripe, old age of 22.

What the Dead Fear eBook Lea Ryan

Juniper wakes up dead, but instead of moving on she gets stuck in limbo, and from there her afterlife takes a turn for the worse. With the help of a girl named Cricket, Juniper must learn the ropes quickly if she's going to survive in limbo, because there are rules to this new world she finds herself in and if she fails to comply, the enigmatic guardian of limbo, Gareth, will be there to make sure she pays dearly for her mistakes.

Though a quick read, Ryan accomplished quite a bit, establishing plot, creating a unique world and developing interesting characters. Best of all, there is an actual ending to this story. It followed the story arc to completion, but it was ended in such a way that it would be easy to expand on the story, which impressed me. I find too often that some authors end their stories with a cliffhanger, or worse, just cut the story off midstream without rhyme or reason.
I enjoyed this novella and would like to read more by this author. I would recommend this to those who like supernatural fiction, urban fantasy and YA fantasy.

What the Dead Fear eBook Lea Ryan Reviews

This story kept my attention and I couldn't stop reading it. A twist in the story kept you guessing and didn't know how it would end. I really enjoyed reading this and will check out her other books. A refreshing/different look at life after death. I will probably dream about this. Finally a book that delivers a great story and an ending that does not disappoint. And 'food for thought'
For a free book, this was perfect. It wasn't too crazy or wild, nothing extra just a good, lovely chase. I loved it. You can visualize everything in this book, the author is that great of a writer. Even the title is unique. The main character is amazing, her persistence is ongoing. And the other character's are awesome too. Great read and AWESOME plot.
Pleasantly surprised in the creative style exhibited in this novella by you Lea Ryan. 22 year old Juniper dies an accidental death and her spirit is left in Limbo. As a rule breaker, Juniper creates her own chaos in limbo as she still worries about the living and not caring about the demise of her own self. She meets Cricket who tries to persuade her to stick to the rules, unsuccessfully. The end of the novella leaves the reader wanting more and for the story to continue. Hopefully, Ms. Ryan will continue this story in the near future.
What I enjoyed about this story was that it wasn't too far out there as a fantasy novel. Some authors become extremely auspicious and try to craft whole realities that look and work almost nothing like ours. What the author managed to do was craft a fantastical reality that really wasn't to separate from the world we live in. It's familiar enough to be absorbed into it and foreign enough to continually enthrall. It's an admittedly touching story in which the dead are more alive than most people I know.

If I could cite any instance of implausibility, I would say it's in the protagonist's emotional maturity for having just been told that she's dead. But the story hints at a possible avenue to explain this. I won't give anything away, but if my personal suspicions are correct than it's acceptable. I was also a bit confused as to why she chose to section this book into parts instead of chapters. The literary connotation between the two may not seem too tremendous, but it initially threw me for a loop. I got over it soon enough and was able to enjoy a remarkably constructed novella. I would highly recommend it-- especially for its low price.
When a young woman dies, she finds herself in Limbo. Her only companion is a young girl who tries to warn her of Limbo's guardian, Gareth. Gareth is there to stop souls from breaking the rules of Limbo and to punish those who do. The main rule is that the dead can observe the living but not interfere. So what happens when those you cared for still need your help?

This was an interesting take on the afterlife, or at least part of it. As a short story, it followed a quick pace. The characters were interesting.

I found this as a free download but feel it would have been worth paying for. Definitely worth checking out.
I downloaded this story because it was free and looked interesting. I didn't expect much, but it was quite good! It is short (900 locations) and deals with the afterlife of a young woman named Juniper and all of the things she encounters while in Limbo. It was a very easy read that drew me in quickly and kept me there. Most freebies are 'read and forget,' but I found myself wanting more from these characters.
This story was really refreshing. The author has a way with words that paints a picture. The story had an easy flow and my only disapointment was that it ended.

Juniper is dead and landed in limbo where she quickly meets Cricket, a little girl. She also quickly meets the caretaker. After a trip to the living during the day which is against the rules she gets locked away. I won't give away anymore.

The story is short yet powerful and dark.
